Sirtuins are protective genes that control the rate at which we age. When stimulated, they slow down our genetically programmed ageing process, combat stress, keep our neurones healthy and prevent premature cell death.
So how can we stimulate them into action?
By eating lower calorie meals! Eating less than 1,000 calories a day stimulates sirtuins, which in turn slow down our natural ageing process. But don't worry if you're a foodie - nowadays cosmetics contain plenty of other molecules (resveratrol, quercetin, fisetin...) that both activate sirtuins and boast their own anti ageing properties.
Sirtuins behave in different ways, depending on the time of day. At night, sirtuins go into repair mode, which means they work hand in hand with the anti ageing ingredients in our night creams. During the day, however, they do an about turn and can in fact increase the undesirable effects of external factors (sun exposure, stress...). In other words, these longevity molecules hydrate our skin and repair damage overnight, hence their anti ageing reputation.
Nowadays lots of hydrating skincare treatments contain sirtuin-boosting ingredients including resveratrol (the anti-wrinkle superstar) and novaxyline, an extremely powerful antioxidant. This means that certain skincare active ingredients boost sirtuin levels to increase cell longevity. The result? Youthful, firm, plump, supple skin!
