What Are Split Ends?
Split ends occur when the outermost protective layer of your hair’s cuticle is damaged and your hair strands start splitting, like little branches, in different directions. While split ends mostly start at the tips of your hair, they are also sometimes observed along the middle of your hair’s length.
What Causes Split Ends?
Split ends can occur due to a variety of factors, including excessive stress and damage to the hair shaft. Frequent use of heat-styling tools, such as curling irons or straighteners, can weaken the hair's protein structure, making it more prone to splitting. Chemical treatments like bleaching, colouring, or perming can strip away the protective cuticle layer, leading to split ends. Rough handling during brushing and combing, as well as using low-quality hair accessories, can also contribute to damage. Environmental factors like exposure to UV radiation and extreme weather conditions can further exacerbate the problem. A religious hair care routine, lifestyle changes and regular trims are essential for split-end prevention.
