Scrubbing brightens our skin and evens out its tone by removing dead cells, pimples and impurities that have accumulated throughout the day. A fine grain scrub prepares our skin for the active ingredients in our creams and boosts our circulation for a lovely, glowing complexion. Here are three formulae that will leave your skin gently scrubbed to perfection!
These scrubs contain natural or synthetic grains that exfoliate using friction. Opt for large grains (sugar, salt) to exfoliate your body and a finer grain when it comes to your face. Classic scrubs can be used on all skin types, but the friction caused may irritate sensitive skin and stimulate sebum production if used on oily skin. Instructions: Use small circular movements so that you don't irritate your skin and avoid your eye area - this zone is extremely fragile and shouldn't be scrubbed. Apply your scrub once or twice a week.
Rather than containing grains, these scrubs are packed with fruit-based exfoliating enzymes - papain from papaya, bromelain from pineapples and ficain from figs. They attack dead skin cells so that they fall off our skin. They're often sold as face masks and chemically exfoliate skin by dissolving the 'glue' that sticks dead cells to our epidermis. They leave skin soft and smooth. As they don't contain grains they won't irritate skin, making them perfect for sensitive skin. Instructions: Apply to clean, dry skin and leave for the amount of time stated on the label before rinsing off. Follow with a moisturiser that's either nourishing, anti-ageing, plumping, anti-fatigue or regenerating.
These chemical formulae come from techniques used by dermatologists. The acids used attack dead cells on the epidermis by stripping off a layer of skin. They usually contain fruit acids or natural compounds that remove the top layer of the epidermis, whilst stimulating skin cell and collagen production. 'Glycolic acid derived from cane sugar is often used in formulae designed for mature skin. It's a small molecule that can deeply penetrate and alter the epidermis. Lactic acid produced from fermented milk is great for brightening dull skin.
Instructions: Apply the lotion to cleansed skin using a cotton pad. There's no need to rub it in and make sure you avoid your eye contour area. Don't rinse it off - let it work its magic overnight! What's more, these can be used on daily basis.
