Before applying a fake tan, you need to soften your skin and get rid of winter's leathery traces. Apply a body scrub to wet skin in circular motions, starting at your feet and working your way up, paying particular attention to your heels and knees. Look for a body scrub with moisturising ingredients such as shea butter and almond oil to keep the skin smooth and help rid of any dry areas. This moisturising scrub will also act as a two-in-one, meaning that you won't need to apply a separate body lotion after, as well. By sloughing off any dead skin, your body will be even and smooth all over, preventing any dark, built-up patches appearing when the fake tan is applied. Applying a dab of moisturiser over any blemishes; especially on your face; will help to prevent product build-up too.
Take your time when applying fake tan, so that you don't miss any areas or end up with streaks. If you're using a lotion or cream, apply using circular movements with your palm. Begin with the back of the calf and work round to the front of your leg. Continue to your knees, still using upward movements. Add a bit more product to cover the thighs, first the front and then the back. If you're a bit cack-handed when it comes to applying colour, try a mist, which is easier to apply. Finish by smoothing the product over your ankles and toes. Don't forget to wash your hands afterwards and remove any product from under your nails!
While most fake tans don't actually have a 'drying time', you still don't want to risk staining your clothes - especially if they're white! To avoid this, don't apply creams, oils or perfumes immediately afterwards, as they'll prevent the fake tan from penetrating into your skin or could ruin the application. Pro tip: if you find that the product has stained the palms of your hands (or even your knees and elbows), try rubbing a slice of lemon over the area to remove any tan build-up; it really works!
